Lucky Cat Series 13 On Air!

Lucky Cat is back on your radio! I’ll be broadcasting every Saturday afternoon at 3.30pm on Resonance 104.4FM.

Last week I was joined by sound artist and radio producer Robin the Fog for a fundraising special. If you missed out you can still donate to the best radio station in the world: https://fundraiser.resonance.fm/ All donations are gratefully received!

Catch up with last week’s show here:

This Saturday I’ll be playing 10″ records from my collection. I started specifically collecting 10″ records some years ago. I was prompted by the China Record Company who mainly seem to have released 10″ vinyl records (I do have one 7″ of theirs). Expect some haunting North Korean ballads, Chinese Jamaican Reggae and Doo Wop.

Back in Spring 2016, inspired by an article on women and sound system culture I decided to form an all-female Reggae DJ collective – Sisters of Reggae.  I had kindly received a name check in the article as a knowledgable selector from theatre director and daughter of Jamaican sound system owner (she’s now married to one too!) Amanda Huxtable. Thank you, Amanda for bringing me up, something I hope I can do for another sister one day.   We do need to help each other along the way – to give confidence and inspire.

This week saw the publication of the first article about Sisters of Reggae:

I am really proud of the collective and know that we will have many great opportunities ahead of us.  We are playing tonight at the Queen’s Head pub Brixton and will be announcing more dates soon! If you need any more info do get in touch with us at sistersofreggae at gmail dot com

My first special guest is Emmet Keane (Shakedown) and we will be playing Popcorn, Blues, Ska, Rocksteady, Rock n Roll, Doo Wop, Rhythm n Blues, Lounge and Exotica for your listening and dancing pleasure.

For an idea of what’s in store take a listen to the Heartbreak and Happiness radio programme Emmet and I did for his regular show Shakedown on DWR:

Lucky Cat Radio – Wondermare

wondermare

Last Saturday I was joined live in the studio by the brilliant semi-acoustic indie folk trio Wondermare!  It was such a joy to have them play live in the studio and to chat to them afterwards too.  They played 4 tracks from their new self titled CD Wondermare.  It is available to download or buy now: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/wondermare

Wondermare will be playing at The Mascara Bar on 2nd December and yours truly will be DJing after their set!

Lucky Cat Radio – London Korean Film Festival

Last week festival programmer and producer Hyunjin Cho popped by to tell us all about the upcoming London Korean Film Festival. The Festival runs from 3rd – 27th November in London and beyond (tours the UK).

This year there is a great programme of events, including a forum on women directors and the portrayal of women in Korean cinema.

You can hear all about the Festival here:

Lucky Cat Radio – Aowen Jin

aowenI was delighted to be joined by artist Aowen Jin on last week’s show. Aowen is a Chinese artist based in the UK who works in a variety of mediums.  Back in 2013 Aowen was on the show to discuss her installation and documentary project Factory Girls; this time Aowen returned to talk about her upcoming installation Ritual at Compton Verney Gallery and future projects.

We also had a discussion about Chinese and Hollywood cinema and ‘whitewashing’ – focussing on Zhang Yimou’s The Great Wall (due out in 2017, starring Matt Damon) and the live action film of Mulan (currently casting). My favourite to play Mulan is Fan Bingbing!

Aowen was a wonderful guest – she is so passionate and animated, a joy to have on the show. I hope you enjoy listening.
